Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the Paris Masters quarterfinals without playing a point after Matteo Berrettini withdrew with an elbow injury, ESPN Deportes reported.

Alcaraz, the world No. 3 and a seven-time Grand Slam champion, had beaten Alex Michelsen in the previous round. He led Berrettini 3-1 in their head-to-head before the walkover.

Alcaraz is seeking his first Paris Masters title. World No. 1 Alexander Zverev and seven-time Paris champion Novak Djokovic have both been eliminated, clearing his path to the final.

Alcaraz’s next opponent is the winner of Arthur Fils, ranked seventh, and Taylor Fritz, ranked 12th. That match is scheduled for Friday.

What the coverage missed

The ESPN Deportes report covers the withdrawal but does not explain what a walkover costs Alcaraz. He has not played a competitive match since beating Michelsen. The quarterfinal will be his first real test of the week. Match rhythm matters in a tournament with the best-of-three format, where a slow start can cost a set.

The report also does not mention that Alcaraz has never won the Paris Masters. He has won every other Masters 1000 title on clay and hard courts except Paris. With Zverev and Djokovic out, this is his best chance to complete the set.

What I think

A walkover is a gift and a problem. Alcaraz saves energy, which matters in a week where he could play three matches in three days. But he enters the quarterfinal cold, against an opponent who has already played and won.

Fritz is the likely opponent, and he is playing for an ATP Finals spot. Fritz will have more on the line and more match practice. Alcaraz has the talent to win, but the walkover could hurt him in the first set.

The Paris title is the one missing from Alcaraz’s resume. With Zverev and Djokovic out, the field is open. If he wins this week, he completes the set of Masters 1000 titles. That is the story, not the walkover.
