RLJE Films acquired U.S. distribution rights to Motor City, a crime-revenge thriller starring Alan Ritchson and Shailene Woodley, Deadline reported. The deal was in the $3-4 million range.
The film contains no spoken dialogue. Ritchson plays a man seeking revenge after his wife is killed. The score is by Jack White. Potsy Ponciroli directed.
The film was made for about $30 million. RLJE plans a theatrical release in 2026 before it lands on streaming.
What the coverage missed
No dialogue is the entire pitch, and it got one sentence in the trade coverage. A $30 million film with no spoken words is a massive creative risk. The audience for a silent revenge thriller is not obvious. The audience for Alan Ritchson is — he stars in Reacher, one of Prime Video’s most-watched shows. The bet is that his fans will follow him to a theater.
Jack White doing the score is a bigger get than the coverage suggested. White has scored two films. His music is guitar-driven and aggressive. A revenge thriller with no dialogue and a Jack White score is a specific aesthetic vision, not a generic action movie.
What I think
This will either be great or unwatchable. There is no middle ground with a dialogue-free film. If Ponciroli can tell the story visually — and the early stills suggest he can — this is the kind of movie that gets a cult following. If he cannot, it is a very expensive experiment.
Ritchson is making a smart career move. Reacher pays the bills. Motor City is the play that says he wants to be taken seriously as an actor. If it works, he gets the roles that Dwayne Johnson wanted and never got. If it does not, he goes back to streaming and makes another season of Reacher. The downside is limited.
