Meghan's father Thomas Markle arrested in Florida on child pornography charges

Thomas Markle, 82, was arrested by the FBI after agents seized 78 items from two storage units containing film negatives of him with pre-pubescent girls. British police had a letter about the allegations in 2019 and did not act.

Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, was arrested in Florida on Nov. 6 on a federal charge of possession of child pornography, the Justice Department announced.

The FBI seized about 78 items from two storage units rented by Markle that contained suspected child sexual abuse material, according to NBC News. The items included film negatives showing an adult man with naked pre-pubescent girls. A witness positively identified the man as Markle, according to court documents.

Markle, 82, is expected to appear in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida in Tampa. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said the government would prosecute “to the fullest extent of federal law.” FBI Director Kash Patel said agents “moved quickly, identified and located the explicit material, and arrested Mr. Markle in Florida.”

The arrest follows an investigation by authorities in the Philippines, who said last month they were looking into whether Markle kept child sexual abuse images at his home while living there. Philippine authorities said they recovered thousands of photos featuring underage males and females. Markle, a retired television lighting and photography director, denied the allegations in October, calling them “sick lies.”

Meghan said in a statement last month that she was “deeply distressed” by the allegations. She said she had been informed of “disturbing allegations” against her father, and British police confirmed they passed her a letter in January 2019 “containing a number of claims about alleged offending outside the United Kingdom.” London’s Metropolitan Police referred itself to Britain’s policing watchdog over its handling of the letter.

“The breadth of what has now been uncovered is more sickening than one could ever imagine,” Meghan said. She said she had kept her children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, away from her father “for one reason: to protect them.”

A spokesperson for Prince Harry and Meghan declined to comment on the arrest. The couple returned to Britain this summer with their two children after several years in the United States. Thomas Markle did not attend their 2018 wedding amid widespread media scrutiny and a fractured relationship with his daughter.

What the coverage missed

The NBC report and the Justice Department press release focus on the arrest and the evidence. The question that got less attention is what British police did with the 2019 letter.

The Metropolitan Police received a letter in January 2019 containing claims about alleged offending by Markle outside the United Kingdom. The force has now referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct over its handling of those claims. A self-referral is an acknowledgment that something in the process may have gone wrong.

The letter arrived in 2019. The arrest happened in 2026. In the years between, Markle moved to the Philippines, where authorities opened their own investigation and recovered thousands of photos. The FBI then acted on information that led to the storage units in Florida.

British police did not inform other law enforcement agencies about the allegations in the letter at the time, according to the NBC report. The Philippines investigation and the FBI arrest were not triggered by British police. They were triggered by other sources.

What I think

The Metropolitan Police had a letter in January 2019 with claims that Thomas Markle was offending against children outside the United Kingdom. The force did not pass the information to other law enforcement agencies. It has now referred itself to a watchdog over that decision.

Markle was arrested seven years later. The investigation that led to his arrest came from the Philippines and the FBI, not from the Met. The letter sat in a file.

The Met’s self-referral is the right step. It is also the minimum step. A letter alleging child sexual abuse should not require a foreign government’s investigation to produce action. The body that received the information in 2019 is the same body now acknowledging it may have handled it wrong.

Meghan said she kept her children away from her father to protect them. She had the letter. She made the decision. The police had the same information and made a different one.

Markle called the allegations “sick lies” in October. The FBI found film negatives in his storage units in November. A witness identified him in the images. The denial and the evidence are now on the record together, and the distance between them is the distance between saying something and being held to it.
