Patriots' TreVeyon Henderson hospitalized with neurological symptoms
Henderson experienced an 'unusual medical emergency' involving unexplained neurological symptoms that required hospitalization. Tests were reassuring but the cause remains unknown.
New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson said he was recently hospitalized after experiencing “an unexpected and unusual medical emergency involving a series of unexplained neurological symptoms,” according to ESPN.
Henderson, 24, said in a statement posted to social media on Friday that he was hospitalized for several days and underwent extensive medical testing, according to NFL.com.
“While the results of my comprehensive medical testing have come back positive and reassuring, the cause of this remains unknown and unexplainable,” Henderson said. “These symptoms have affected my strength, coordination, and some of my physical functions.”
Henderson missed the Patriots’ Week 8 victory over the Miami Dolphins. He has not practiced since Oct. 28 and was added to the injury report with an illness designation on Oct. 29.
Coach Mike Vrabel said the team will support Henderson. “I’ll support him, the best way that I know how is just to care for him, listen to him and do whatever we can to get him healthy,” Vrabel said. He did not put a timeline on Henderson’s return and said the team may place him on the non-football injury list.
In six games this season, Henderson has 203 rushing yards on 52 carries with one touchdown. A 2025 second-round pick out of Ohio State, he rushed for 911 yards and nine touchdowns as a rookie.
The Patriots, 5-3, host the Green Bay Packers, 5-3, on Sunday at Gillette Stadium.
What the coverage missed
The coverage focused on the statement and the injury. The part that got less attention is what “neurological symptoms” means for a running back.
Henderson said the symptoms affected his strength, coordination and physical functions. For a running back, strength and coordination are the job. The symptoms affect the parts of the body that make the position possible.
The cause is unknown. The tests are reassuring. Those two statements coexist. The medical team can say the worst is ruled out without saying what caused the problem.
Henderson is 24. He is in his second NFL season. The symptoms came without explanation. For a player whose career depends on his body, an unexplained neurological event is not an injury. It is a question about whether the career can continue.
What I think
Henderson is 24 years old. He was hospitalized with neurological symptoms. The cause is unknown. The tests are reassuring. The career is uncertain.
The statement is careful. Henderson says his health and long-term well-being are his foremost priorities. He does not say when he will return. Vrabel does not say when he will return. The non-football injury list is on the table.
A running back who loses strength and coordination is a running back who cannot play. The symptoms may resolve. They may not. The cause may be found. It may not. Henderson is working with specialists and physical therapists. The language is about recovery, not about football.
The Patriots are 5-3. They play the Packers on Sunday. Henderson will not be there. The team will use Rhamondre Stevenson, Corey Kiner and Lan Larison. Vrabel said he does not plan to add another running back.
Henderson’s statement is the right one. Health first. Football second. The team’s response is the right one. Support first. Timeline second. The question that remains is whether the symptoms resolve and whether the cause is found. Everything else depends on the answer.
