The Weeknd's $1.3 billion tour breaks Elton John's male artist record

The Weeknd broke the record for the highest-grossing tour by a male artist in history as his After Hours Til Dawn stadium tour wrapped with a final performance in Kuala Lumpur, Variety reported.

The tour grossed over $1.3 billion, confirmed by promoter Live Nation. It is the third-largest tour in history, behind Taylor Swift’s Eras tour (over $2 billion) and Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres (over $1.5 billion). The previous male artist record was Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which grossed over $939 million.

Since kicking off in July 2022, the tour spanned 176 shows across 67 cities, 30 countries and five continents, selling more than 9 million tickets. The Asia leg alone expanded from 11 announced dates to 17 shows, including three nights in Bangkok and four in Hong Kong.

The tour grossed over $500 million and sold more than 3 million tickets in 2026 alone, according to the announcement.

The Weeknd donated $8.5 million to the XO Humanitarian Fund and Global Citizen during the tour, supporting hunger relief and education for children. This year, $3 million went to the UN World Food Programme and Global Citizen, including a new campaign focused on women and girls in health, education and economic opportunity.

What the coverage missed

Variety’s report is a clean tally of the numbers. It does not put the $1.3 billion in context against the economics of stadium touring.

The tour ran for four years across five continents. That is not a tour in the traditional sense. It is a touring business. Elton John’s record was set over five years. Taylor Swift’s Eras tour grossed $2 billion in under two. Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres hit $1.5 billion over roughly two and a half.

The Weeknd’s per-show gross is roughly $7.4 million. Taylor Swift’s Eras tour averaged closer to $10 million per show. The comparison is not apples to apples, but it shows the scale: the Weeknd needed more shows and more time to reach a number that Swift reached faster.

The charity donations are real money. $8.5 million over four years from a tour grossing $1.3 billion is about 0.65% of gross. It is more than most artists donate. It is also a rounding error on a touring business of this size.

What I think

The record is the record. The Weeknd sold 9 million tickets and grossed $1.3 billion. Elton John held the male artist mark at $939 million. The gap is not close.

The more interesting number is $500 million in 2026 alone. The tour did not peak early and taper. It grew. The Asia leg expanded from 11 dates to 17. Demand in markets the tour had already visited was strong enough to justify return trips. That is rare. Most stadium tours open big and decline. This one built.

The donations matter less than the coverage suggests and more than the cynics will admit. $8.5 million is real money to the organizations receiving it. It is also a marketing line in a press release. Both things are true. The Weeknd did not have to donate anything. He did. The amount is modest relative to the gross, but the gross is an extraordinary number.
